- Rural branches
CBR at Pune
In 1994 a survey was done of 200 villages, in this area and we found the villagers were living in abject poverty and very difficult living conditions. They spent almost 4 hrs a day to get 2 buckets of water. In such a situation a person with Mental Retardation was completely ignored. So when a generous friend offered us premises in Kanhe village, Pune District we started our first Rural Branch in 1998 with 11 students. We found the villagers very receptive and willing to learn and improve the lives of their special children. Today we have a school, Vocational Training centre and a residential section with over 45 children.
CBR at Nashik
A friend saw the great work being done for the persons with Mental Retardation on our Mumbai campus and Kanhe village and was so impressed that she offered her bungalow and land to us in Deolpali camp, Nashik District to help the people there. The centre was started on 2000. When we conducted a survey in the neighbouring villages we found almost 40 children with Mental Retardation and associated conditions who we admitted in our centre immediately. We have a school and Vocational Training Centre here and are planning to start a residential program shortly.
Today we have reached out to approx. 700+ villages in and around Pune and Nashik District and are guiding and training children and adults with various disabilities on how to deal with their problems. We are assisting them with nutrition, medical aid, and rehabilitation wherever possible. It is an ongoing, service cum research oriented programme based on the CBR Models of Centre, Community and Home based service delivery.
