  1. Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR)

Of a total population of 1.1 billion people nearly 700 million Indians live in 600,000 villages across rural India. It is estimated that 2-3% of the general population has a mental handicap – which goes to show that the rural population also has a considerable percentage of children with a mental handicap! The problem is more challenging in the rural areas due to ignorance towards the causes and prevention of mental handicaps and hence the recurrence risks are high for any impairments or disability. While India's economy booms, educational and interventional opportunities for these special children remain out of grasp for majority of the rural population.

Our Community based Rehabilitation (CBR) programme is formulated to actively involve the community in the entire rehabilitation process of persons with disabilities. The important ingredients of CBR are Medical/Therapeutic rehabilitation, education, social integration, vocational rehabilitation and economic rehabilitation in the rural areas. The main aim here is to give a person with disabilities a good quality of life and the right to live with Dignity.

CBR activities include:
Creating Awareness about Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) and scope of their
        improvement, facilities available for PWDs.

Conducting Survey.
Identification of the persons with disabilities (PWD).
Providing counseling and guidance to PWD’s as well as their parents.
To refer the PWD to medical/educational and other agency as per their needs.
Promoting integrated education by admitting children with disabilities in the local village
       schools.

Creating public awareness about the potentials of the PWDs through concrete
        programmes in the rural areas.

Networking with other such NGOs/bodies/services etc.
Providing economic rehabilitation through various activities such as training in rural crafts,
       agriculture or other trades.

Facilitating the rural persons with disabilities through career counseling and guidance to
        find employment opportunities.

Enabling PWDs to avail concessions and benefits available from the Government and Non
        – Government sectors. Assisting them to get the necessary certificates for this.

To convert the Community Based Rehabilitation to Community Involved Rehabilitation by
involving family, community, government and other agencies.
