Our Children

Case 1: Rahul (name changed to protect identity)

Background: Rahul came to The Research Society when he was 11 years old. An abysmally low IQ of 40 coupled with a bad stammer, fearfulness and insecurity about himself made life gravely disappointing for him. His parents were dejected and were on the verge of abandoning him.

Case 2: Mohan (name changed to protect identity)

Background: He came to our Institute when he was 3 and half years old. His complaints were limited speech, temper tantrums & self stimulating behaviour like head banging, flinging objects out of the window, rocking & restlessness. On assessment he obtained a social quotient of 50- 52 points, which placed him in the moderate grade of Mental retardation. He had limited speech and autistic features

Case 3: Tarun (name changed to protect identity)

Age: 26 years

Background: Tarun came to us when he was 5 and half years old. He had limited speech, falls while walking, poor attention span, and he used to be pre-occupied most of the time. He also used to beat up kids from the neighborhood. On assessment, the clinical impression was ‘Ataxic Cerebral Palsy’: Mental Retardation with Secondary Microcephaly (due to pre maturity & low birth weight). He had an IQ of around 54-56 points that placed him in the Moderate grade of Retardation

Case 4: Dimple (name changed to protect identity)

Background: Dimple came to us when she was 7 ½ years, with complaints of scholastic backwardness & poor memory. On assessment, she was diagnosed as a case of Mild Metaphyseal Dysplasia. She had mild mental handicap with an IQ of 65-70 points. Her speech was limited to simple sentences.

Case 5: Prakash (name changed to protect identity)

Background: Prakash came to us when he was 12 years old with the chief complaint of ‘Scholastic Backwardness’. He was a restless, impulsive and an emotionally unstable boy. He was very temperamental, made no eye contact & did not like to interact with anyone. He had strong likes and dislikes, reacted very adversely if he was approached by even a staff member he did not ‘gel’ with.

Case 6: Nikhil (name changed to protect identity)

Background: When Nikhil came to the Research Society, he suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder and was hyper active. Being profoundly autistic, Nikhil would find it difficult to sit in a place, even for 5 minutes. He would run around the classroom and give the teachers a tough time.
