History
The Research Society for the Care, Treatment and Training of Children In Need Of Special Care, is one of the oldest and largest not for profit organizations in the country serving children and older individuals with mental challenges and other related disabilities. Unfortunately, this group, especially those from the low-income group families, are often considered a curse, or are completely neglected for lack of options. We have dedicated ourselves to uplift this extremely neglected segment of our community and over the past 66 years have served thousands of special children and their families.
The school was started by Mr. & Mrs. Hormusjee Vakeel for their daughter Dina who was born with Down's syndrome. The 'school' started in 1944, with 2 kids from their house and by 1949 there were over 75 students. The expenses of the school also could no longer be borne by the family and so the school was registered as a 'Society' so that donations could be accepted and donors were eligible for tax exemptions.
The Tata family – Lady Ratan Tata and J.R.D Tata were family friends and had supported the Vakeels throughout. In 1956, when the Vakeels were looking for land/space to start the Institute the Tatas once again stepped forward and through Mr. Minoo Tata donated the current 2-acre Sewri land to them. The first large donation came from the Prince of Bhutan. The Prime Minister of Bhutan's daughter was admitted to the school as she had mild mental retardation. They also donated the first bus for the school.
"A Community Based Rehabilitation Program through which we have reached out to over approximately 300 villages in and around Nashik and Pune Districts"
Today the Institute caters to over 700 people annually and serves as a 'one stop shop' for all the needs of a mentally challenged person with ‘associated disabilities’ e.g. Epilepsy, Autism, Cerebral Palsy etc.
